Did you know New Yorkers have to wait longer than residents of any other state to change their party registration?

Right now, someone registering as Democrat a full 6 months ahead of our Presidential primary will be unable to vote in one of the most important and watched primaries of our lifetime.  Many people make final decisions about who to vote for in the final month before an election. They shouldn’t have their decision taken away from them before they have even started looking at candidates. In fact, New York’s voting laws are so restrictive that they have been used by to justify draconian restrictions on voting in other states.

As the Manhattan Young Democrats our members are particularly affected by these outdated rules because young people are so much more likely to be registered as an independent.  But right now, there is a solution to fix the problem with the Let All Democrats Vote Amendment.  This amendment would lower the number of days in advance you have to switch parties to vote in federal primaries from 262 days (193 for presidential primaries) to the country’s average of 25.  This will allow many voters to avoid the embarrassment of being unable to vote or disenfranchised after they try to exercise their democratic rights.

You can make your voice heard here and ask our state party to bring our voting laws into the 21st century.  Public comments are going on until Saturday, May 18th so don’t miss your opportunity!

The LET ALL DEMOCRATS VOTE AMENDMENT changes the NYS Democratic Party’s 2020 Delegate Selection Plan to guarantee that all New York voters who apply to join the Democratic Party at least 25 days before the 2020 NY Presidential Primary get to VOTE in that Primary. No legislative action is required—the Party has the right to make this rule for its Primary.

Changing party affiliation 25 days prior to an election is the national average, it matches NY’s voter registration deadline, and it complies with the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) new rule that switching parties needs to be easy.
