What MYD events, meetings, or programs have you attended in 2019?
Out of 35 events held so far in 2019, I have attended 24. This excludes monthly board meetings, MYD co-sponsored events, and local democratic club meetings that I additionally attended on behalf of MYD.

What strengths do bring to this position?

I’m incredibly proud of pulling together an excellent team that reconstructed MYD’s foundational issues. I additionally followed through on my 2019 application goals, and am proud to relay the results here.

My administration’s highlights include:
-Revamping MYD’s website, finally transitioning to the MYD.NYC domain.
-Raising MYD’s funds to over 6x our initial budget in December 2018 – that’s 600% more than what we had in the beginning of this year!
-Connecting over 70 applicants to their local clubs for MYD’s Open Seat Project, and providing 17 clubs with an MYD member for County Committee. 2019’s shortened primary calendar meant MYD plugged in just as many members in previous years with only 1/3 of the time to do it.
-Doubled the amount of MYD-hosted events since 2018. 2019 events now make up 20% of all events ever held by MYD since Eventbrite’s use in 2014.
-Knocked on 1000+ doors, made 600+ calls, and wrote 400 letters for GOTV, swing district, and policy efforts.
-Hosting MYD’s first alumni gathering.

On last year’s membership, I had specific goals…

Rebuilding Active Membership –
We have provided more opportunities to members by…
-Increasing the average amount of events per month by 1.
-Creating a welcome membership email with ways to get involved to all new members who signed up to our weekly newsletter.
-Encouraging board member/new-member engagement, with having at least 2 board members attend every MYD event.
-Created a default set of literature for new members to read further about current NYC politics on MYD.NYC.
-Implementing a “Task Force Cheat Sheet”, for task force members and leads to get started with initial resources, so they can focus more on policy and not on obstacles.

Social Media Rebranding
We have improved our social media efforts by…
-Leveraging a previously unused Marketing design for MYD throughout 2019.
-Appointing a “Social Media Director,” who assisted the secretary in social media posts and moderation.
-Encouraged crossposting social media through co-sponsors of MYD events.
-Designing a template for task forces to provide social media content to be more easily handled.
-Creating and operationalizing a social media platform to schedule pre-created posts.
-Revamping the weekly newsletter for regular member consumption.

Bringing Together Active Progressive Groups
We have tightened bonds with other progressive groups by…
-Co-canvassing with Staten Island Young Dems and Rockland County Young Dems.
-Co-hosting GOTV events with SwingLeft and the Four Freedoms Democratic Club.
-Building resources for MYD.NYC for MYD members to educate themselves and engage with their local community boards.
-Strengthening relationships with the four other young Dem boroughs of NYC; MYD this year proposed co-hosting a holiday party alongside the other young Dems and is awaiting approval from the other four boards.
-Connecting 70+ members to their local democratic clubs to get more involved.

What is your vision for the Manhattan Young Democrats for 2020? Please give some specific examples of initiatives you would undertake throughout the year.

2020 is a big deal. We all know this – it’s why I’m running again, to maintain MYD stability through such a vital Presidential election. In Manhattan we host both local political wonks and transplants – we must activate both to ensure a Democratic President in 2020.

With the Mayoral race in 2021 and many other NYC City Council seats open, we need to ensure the Blue Wave in 2020 will carry through to 2021 to make sure New Yorkers are still politically active for such an important voting year in NYC.

With 2020 around the corner and 2021 holding big races for NYC, next year needs to focus on….

Empowering young New York Dems to kick president 45 out in 2020…
-Increase number of GOTV events in 2020 alongside other local political organizations.
-Strengthen relationships between all NY-based Democratic clubs to encourage streamlining of GOTV efforts statewide.
-Improve social media efforts to reach out to usually untapped online NY-based networks.
-Provide a rapid-response Slack channel for demonstrations, campaigns, and last minute canvassing opportunities for MYD members.
-Provide three local orientations (uptown, midtown, downtown) for how to get better involved with local NYC issues within their community.
-Create a job board on MYD.NYC for individuals to connect and contact interested employers and Democratic campaigns.
-Engage in at least three GOTV efforts alongside other local clubs within New York City.
-Upload articles on MYD.NYC on how to get directly involved with political campaigns, with tie-ins to Issues Assemblies that will be based on the same topic.

Improving MYD’s overall membership experience –
-Engage with with social media influences, artists and cultural creators to better reflect how Young Democrats feel in 2020.
-Create direct engagement opportunities with local electeds and their MYD constituents through smaller local events.
-Push membership to continue policy and campaign initiatives like task forces and canvassing events, with board members serving to activate the goals of our membership.
-Encourage a “welcome to MYD” coffee session once every month for new members to meet each other.
-Reestablish MYD President Office hours, so members can speak directly to MYD leadership.

Improve MYD’s overall technology state –
-Sponsor and fund MYD members to attend events they would otherwise be financially unable to attend.
-Encourage more MYD alumni events alongside new or younger members to get more directly involved with local NYC politics.
-Stronger social media presence that better reflects our millennial/gen-z mentality. We can definitely improve on this from last year.
-Rebuild our communications between the MYD community – relaunch MYD’s Slack channel for all members and (stretch goal)add a message board on MYD.NYC.
-Create more seasonal MYD branding, and make sure we are timely and updated with local NYC and federal events.
-Engage with more technology-oriented political groups to collaborate on MYD technology strains.
-Improve membership logistics, like Mailchimp architecture and cybersecurity of used platforms.
-Increase member-crafted blog posts and educational articles on MYD.NYC.

Serving as an executive officer of MYD is a significant time commitment. Please list your commitments outside of your employment (i.e. leadership positions in other clubs/organizations).
This will not be an issue.

I have demonstrated my commitment to MYD as 2019 President, and will continue to treat the position with the time commitment it deserves.

Give three (3) examples of issues that are important to young New Yorkers and how you would, from your position, engage our membership to take action.
-Creating a Democratic party New Yorkers can actually believe in
-Getting involved in kicking president 45 out of office
-Ensuring New Yorkers can still afford living, commuting and working in their city without major stress or strain.
-Creating an environment where all New Yorkers can feel not just safe, but powerful and represented within their state and local laws.

What would you hope to gain from MYD, personally and/or professionally, if elected to this position?

I hope to gain an unlimited amount of energy that will encourage all future voters that their vote really, truly does matter. I hope to gain a better sense of diplomacy to wisely converse with particularly frustrated or hopeless citizens, and the tact and drive to swiftly fix any future obstacles.

I also hope to gain a stronger, larger, action-oriented community of progressive advocates who want to better serve and empower others with our country. I believe MYD can serve as the torch to build that community.

Is there anything else you think we should know about you or your candidacy? (Optional)
I joined MYD during a surge of concerned young Democrats starving for political education and activation. I was met, justifiably, by an MYD board that was just as confused and baffled as to how to handle the next four years. I want to do everything in the MYD President’s power to ensure 45’s second term is mere imagination – and if not successful, I will be prepared for the surge of frustration that I witnessed as a member in 2016. I have spent the past three years doing my part to make sure MYD can handle such an overwhelming event like 2016.

What MYD events, meetings, or programs have you attended in 2019?
General Meetings, Executive Board Meetings, Issues Assembly, Young Gets It Done, Canvassing and Phone Banking Events for New York State Candidates. DNC Presidential Watch Party in Harlem, New York State Young Democrats Convention and the Open Seat Project.

What strengths do bring to this position?
Extensive political and management experience. I’ve served as Vice-President of my local Democratic Club for 3 years. I have a major understanding of the political landscape of New York County and New York City. I’ve been involved politically in my community for over 15 years and been an active member of Manhattan Young Democrats for over 7 years. During this time I’ve learned a great deal about what we need to empower young democrats and create opportunities for employment for our members through the relationship built with various organizations and elected officials. I’ve served as Chairman of the Department of Youth and Community Development- Neighborhood Advisory Board (NAB) 12, Manhattan, Chair of the Youth & Education Committee on Community Board 12, Manhattan, President of my local Precinct Community Council and currently Deputy North Region Director of the LGBTQIA Caucus for Young Democrats of America (YDA). As Vice-President I will assist and support the President in any capacity possible from day to day operations to ensuring our membership stays Active, Involved and Informed.

What is your vision for the Manhattan Young Democrats for 2020? Please give some specific examples of initiatives you would undertake throughout the year.
Empowerment 2020- Membership is crucial for the development of the organization and to fulfill the mission of the Manhattan Young Democrats as prescribed in its by-laws. My goal is to reactivate former members and recruit a substantial amount of new members in the next year. The recruitment and engagement of members is anticipated to begin as early as January 2020 with the sole purpose of engaging aged out former members, former members are no longer active, current members and potential new members throughout New York County (Manhattan). Membership recruitment goals will be broken up by the 12 Assembly Districts as designated by the State of New York. The 65th Assembly District to the 76th Assembly District. Special emphasis on the 65th, 68th, 69th, 70th, 71st, 72nd, 74th and 76th. These districts have a large population of young voters under the age of 35. Our goal is to increase participation in every single Assembly District across Manhattan.

If elected, I will urge the board to pursue an aggressive goal of 1,000 paid members by the end of calendar year 2020. These members will allow us to push the envelope and become one of New York State’s most powerful and largest membership base young democrat chapters in the State.

LGBTQIA- Lesbian, gay and transgender people, especially those of color, experience violence at disproportionately high rates compared to straight cisgender people. If elected, I will urge the Board to create a LBGTQIA Committee to begin forming and shaping policies that affect the LBGTQIA communities not only in New York City but across New York State. As a Gay Young Professional Latino of Northern Manhattan, my goal is to make MYD more inclusive to all.

Women’s Rights & New Leaders Academy- Create a MYD Leadership Academy: will train, equip and support the next generation of Non-Conforming and Women Leaders. 2021 is just around the corner and there is no time like RIGHT NOW, to empower Women across the City to take active leadership in their communities. This is why I will urge my colleagues on the Board to include District Leaders, State Committee, City Council, Borough President and other crucial seats that will be open in 2021 as part of our Open Seat Project. It will be our duty to ensure a cohort of at least 25 or more active leaders to pursue office in 2021. The MYD Leadership Academy will be a 4-6 week training that will give future candidates the tools to run for office.

Jobs & Volunteerism- Republicans love giveaways for hedge fund managers and billionaires. Let’s change things up at MYD. Our number priority for our membership is to ensure their activism and leadership leads to meaningful and gainful employment through our partnerships with Elected Officials. MYD will host Annual Career Fairs exclusively open to Members only and will share employment opportunities with our members on a monthly bases.
MYD will develop and share volunteer opportunities from Phone banking, Canvassing to Letter Writing campaigns to support Democrats across New York State. Our goal is to ensure our membership have the tools to access employment and volunteer opportunities.

The aforementioned is a small list of proposals I will work on as your Vice-President of the Manhattan Young Democrats. My goal is to hold the Issues Assembly and other meetings catered to listening to Young Voters and Members across Manhattan in every single neighborhood from Chinatown, Lower East Side, Chelsea, Tribeca, Hell’s Kitchen, Upper West Side, El Barrio, Upper East Side, West Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood. I will be your voice and the leader you need to make sure you’re heard. To make sure your concerns are addressed. Make sure to build the next generation of leaders for the Democratic Party. I hope I can earn your Support in November 2019 to become your next Vice-President of the Manhattan Young Democrats.

Serving as an executive officer of MYD is a significant time commitment. Please list your commitments outside of your employment (i.e. leadership positions in other clubs/organizations).

Deputy North Region Director- LGBTQIA Caucus (YDA)

Give three (3) examples of issues that are important to young New Yorkers and how you would, from your position, engage our membership to take action.
Education, Immigration and LGBTQIA Issues. As Vice President, I will create, design and tailor events and programs to learn the most pressing issues affecting New York County Voters in line with Education, Immigration and LGBTQIA. As a member of the LGBTQIA community, I will leverage resources and relationships with New York City’s most powerful LGBTQIA political and community based organizations to discuss innovative ways to address these issues through policy reforms and activism. From these discussions design events to highlight issues, propose policy reform and lobby our state and federal elected officials.
My goal is to bring a large contingency of Manhattan Young Democrats to the New York State Senate and Assembly chambers to actively voice our concerns directly to members of both chambers. Immigration; there are thousands of undocumented New Yorkers and the current administration at the White House has targeted the immigrant community. I will work closely with organizations and the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs to produce events around this important issue to ensure MYD is at the forefront.

As Vice President, I will urge transparency with respects to the decision making process of the board. From voting on MYD events to nominating individuals to the board, I will keep the membership Involved, Active and Informed throughout the entire process.

What would you hope to gain from MYD, personally and/or professionally, if elected to this position?
Earn your trust to serve as your Vice-President and elevate MYD to a new level. Looking forward to meeting new members and building coalitions across Manhattan, The City and the State. In the end meet some amazing young leaders. Make new friends who enjoy exploring the City and trying out new places to eat.

What MYD events, meetings, or programs have you attended in 2019?
I’ve attended almost all of our meetings, programs, and events through 2019; I’ve been on the leadership team to plan and run most of them!

What strengths do bring to this position?
In transitioning from my current role as Programming Director to Vice President, I would bring a strong knowledge of which events have been successful and why, as well as an informed vision of programs that will inform and activate young, progressive New Yorkers for this crucial election year. Through my professional network I have also been able to, and would continue to, connect the organization to important partners from the activist community as we seek to engage with advocacy and political campaigns in the New York Metropolitan area.

What is your vision for the Manhattan Young Democrats for 2020? Please give some specific examples of initiatives you would undertake throughout the year.

2020 presents a unique and pressing challenge to organizers throughout the country, and I see MYD as a member of that group; we’re an organizer of energetic Democrats in New York that can effectively contribute to the great political and social awakening taking place in America. As much as we need to give our members a way to get rooted in NYC politics with an eye toward 2021 and beyond, it is absolutely crucial for us to keep our fingers on the pulse of the presidential election.

We need to train members in the best ways to advocate for their policy and candidate priorities, and mobilize them behind our Democratic nominee for the general election. We’ve been able to transport members across the state for canvassing opportunities, organized a caravan down to D.C. for the inaugural Women’s March in 2017, and brought one of the largest delegations to Indianapolis for this year’s Young Democrats of America convention. I have no doubt that with the right leadership we can coordinate an even greater level of mobilization for races up and down the ballot throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions in 2020.

Serving as an executive officer of MYD is a significant time commitment. Please list your commitments outside of your employment (i.e. leadership positions in other clubs/organizations).
My involvement with Manhattan Young Dems has been the most important activity in my social and civic life. For that reason I have consistently attended our General Meetings, Issues Assemblies, fundraising events, board meetings, and various other conference calls and Young Democrats events at the state and national level. Every week I visit Lydia’s Magic Garden in East Harlem to tend to my garden bed and help with other tasks as my fellow gardeners need, but that’s never stopped me from pausing in the gazebo to take calls or send emails for MYD!

Give three (3) examples of issues that are important to young New Yorkers and how you would, from your position, engage our membership to take action.

Time and again our members have made it clear that affordable living and election reform are two of the most pressing issue areas that young progressives need to be engaged around in this era. I agree that ensuring that every New Yorker can afford to build a life here and has dependable, fair, and just democratic systems through which to advocate their need is of utmost importance; I would also add to this list the fact that loosely-regulated data collection by private entities, the increasing use of arbitration as a legal strategy to hem-in consumer and worker rights, and a work culture that ruthlessly prioritizes productivity over humanity have led to a labor environment that is downright exploitative of our already debt-burdened generation. I guess you could say that labor is my third “issue area” in that view.

MYD has made strides in the past year to connect with activists, elected officials, and impacted communities in ways that ultimately help in the push for a society that allows each individual to live, work, and voice their interests with dignity. In the next year, we can extend our relationships and participate in more on-the-ground activities with labor and community partners. We can also contribute more actively to the generation of knowledge around these issues by providing a platform for members with expertise to share their thoughts on effective policies, whether it’s through our digital channels, in public government hearings, or in relevant amicus briefs. We can also leverage our relationships with elected officials to test and move member-sourced legislation through the chambers of power at the local, state, and national levels.

What would you hope to gain from MYD, personally and/or professionally, if elected to this position?
Because I have been active in MYD since 2016, a feeling of satisfaction from seeing the organization successfully contribute to a rebuke of the corrupt, libertarian-fascist system that has been forced on working Americans over the past few years is definitely something I’m seeking to gain personally from this position. I also hope to gain leadership and management skills that I will carry forward to support the progressive movement in the future.

Is there anything else you think we should know about you or your candidacy? (Optional)

I don’t see identity politics or woke culture as some accident of the current political environment. Now more than ever, communities have been empowered to speak out against the injustices that they have been facing for centuries, and our politics owes proper representation to all of the voices that it claims to govern. The only people who seem to have a problem with that are the ones who have been privileged to not notice (or just not care about) the quiet suffering of the people who their power in society has hurt.

I don’t believe that anybody’s perfect, but I do believe that MYD has a duty to create spaces where anyone can feel included, heard, and empowered. We need to be a place where people can grow and change, but only if they’re willing to put in the effort, own their faults, and think critically about other perspectives. I sincerely hope that we don’t have to deal with toxicity within the organization going forward, but I am one-hundred percent ready and willing to help MYD contribute meaningfully to conversations about these issues in partnership with all of our community.

Treasurer

Natasha Herrick

Treasurer – Incumbent

What MYD events, meetings, or programs have you attended in 2019?

January – General, Issues Assembly, Women’s march + letter writing; February – General, Issues Assembly; March – General, Advocacy Season Letter Writing; April – General, Issues Assembly, May – General, Issues Assembly; June – General, Engendering Progress; July – General; August – YGID, Issues Assembly; September – General, Issues Assembly; October – Letter Writing with Swing Left, General, Disability Community Voter Rights and Information, Canvass in Staten Island.

What strengths do bring to this position?

I served as MYD treasurer in 2019, during which time I exhibited the strengths listed below. I hope to continue drawing on these strengths and building on this work to support MYD in 2020.

Attention to Detail – When I first began the treasurer role, I worked extensively to reconcile accounts from the prior year in order to ensure a successful transition between treasurers under the New York State Board of Elections. Since this official transition, I have kept thorough financial records for our filings. In addition, I compile a daily accounting of revenue and expenses in a report shared monthly with the board.

Transparency – On the MYD website link allowing individuals to purchase membership, I added a detailed description of MYD’s status as a multi-candidate committee with the NYS BOE, as well as instructions on where to view our filings. What’s more, I created a summary report of our monthly revenue and expenses by category that is now linked to our public website (with the help of our tech savvy president).

Leadership on Key Budget Initiatives – I established a strong foundation upon which MYD was able to grow its budget by six times the amount we started with in January. I accomplished this through three primary initiatives. 1) I created an initial budget that allocated $10-$50 to each board member to empower them to carry out their work. To minimize spending, the proposal included an option for them to combine funds to support larger initiatives without presenting an additional cost to the organization. 2) I brought to fruition an idea (often spoken about but never executed) to create an MYD leadership alumni fundraiser, which helped us foster connections with those personally and financially invested in the organization’s success. 3) And finally, I organized interviews with our five Young Gets It Done honorees to simultaneously advertise our event and highlight impressive young individuals carrying out work that MYD values. Building upon my work to lay this foundation, the execution of these items was made possible with the help of an incredible team who was willing to spend frugally and assist in raising money for our work.

What is your vision for the Manhattan Young Democrats for 2020? Please give some specific examples of initiatives you would undertake throughout the year.

My vision for the Manhattan Young Democrats in 2020 is to expand our partnerships across the city and country as a means to amplify more voices, increase our own understanding of each other’s viewpoints, and work together to get Democrats elected.

The beauty of engaging with the Democratic party is that it offers opportunities to sit in a room that is immensely diverse and embrace those differences. Without a doubt, collaboration is inherently challenging as we each come to the table with our own set of privileges, issues we confront, and processes for addressing them. But we are ten steps ahead. We, and especially we as the young faces in the Democratic party, are confronting conversations that do not come up in practically any other circumstance in which an individual typically, or ever, interacts. Across New York City, our schools, neighborhoods, workplaces, and social functions are very often segregated by ability, citizenship status, income, race, sexual orientation, and beyond. While the narrative is that we are “crybabies” complaining about anything that does not go our way, I see it differently. I see the conversations which focus on topics ten steps ahead of what our current leaders are talking about. I see young leaders who hold themselves to the highest standards as they persist in finding ways to ensure everyone in the room is included and heard.

As an organization that regularly brings in community leaders to speak at Issues Assemblies and is fostering connections with groups that we can help phone bank and canvass, MYD is well-positioned to expand its collaboration with others. This work is truly enhanced when we have money to reserve event spaces, cover transportation for members, and so forth. As treasurer this past year, I recognized the need to build the strong financial base that we did for the organization. If elected, I would be committed to setting another fiscally responsible budget and raising critical funds at our leadership alumni and Young Gets It Done fundraisers.

Serving as an executive officer of MYD is a significant time commitment. Please list your commitments outside of your employment (i.e. leadership positions in other clubs/organizations).
I am a member of my local political club and joined County Committee, but I have no leadership commitments outside of MYD. I have focused my time on contributing substantively to MYD over this past year and will continue to do so in 2020.

Give three (3) examples of issues that are important to young New Yorkers and how you would, from your position, engage our membership to take action.
If elected treasurer, my role in that capacity would be focused on maintaining a robust budget to support the programming of other board members. However, in my role more generally as an MYD member and leader I would work on engaging people on the following issues:

1) Affordable housing, and living more generally, is a pressing issue for young New Yorkers. I would like to connect with leaders at housing and homelessness organizations to see how we can work in partnership with young people who are severely rent burdened or in and out of permanent housing to advocate for necessary policy reforms. Furthermore, I would like to see MYD put pressure on political candidates to discuss the issue of affordable housing as it is a crisis in cities across the country.

2) Educational affordability, ranging from paying to attend CUNY to paying off student debt, is a critical issue for young New Yorkers. I would like to partner with students to advocate for more CUNY funding and hold a financial literacy session on student debt.

3) The subway system is a hot topic among young New Yorkers (and many others). MYD is uniquely positioned to draw in young people to organize around this issue so that we could advocate for greater financial investment in our subway system.

What would you hope to gain from MYD, personally and/or professionally, if elected to this position?
I hope to give back to MYD this year by helping members feel comfortable to ask questions, encouraging them to take on leadership and advocacy opportunities in the organization and their own communities, and ensuring we stay in a strong financial position as an organization. I was able to learn a great deal about government, politics, and the NYS Board of Elections filing process through my time at MYD, in addition to making great friends with unique policy interests I could not quite find in my other friendship circles. I would like to help other people learn and make friends as I have.

Is there anything else you think we should know about you or your candidacy? (Optional)I am more than happy to hear your feedback and suggestions for why MYD should be doing to better serve its members and advocate for young people. Feel free to reach me at NatashaH.info[@]gmail[.]com.
